About Matthew
For more than three decades, Matthew W. Sowell has been recognized as one of Florida’s leading medical malpractice attorneys—known not only for his courtroom skill, but for his deep understanding of the medical issues at the heart of the cases he tries. As Managing Partner of the firm’s Jacksonville office, Matt represents individuals and families whose lives have been permanently altered by preventable medical errors. His exceptional credentials set him apart: he is one of just sixteen Florida lawyers nationally certified in medical malpractice law by the American Board of Professional Liability Attorneys, and one of the small percentage of Florida lawyers to earn Board Certification in Civil Trial Law from The Florida Bar.
Matt devotes his practice to the most challenging and medically complex malpractice cases, particularly those involving neurological and cardiovascular injuries such as stroke, paralysis, and traumatic brain injury. His passion for this work led him to create the Stroke Litigation Group within the American Association for Justice, now the largest national platform for training trial lawyers on stroke-related malpractice issues. Through this leadership, Matt has helped shape the way attorneys across the country approach, investigate, and try stroke cases.
Across his career, Matt has recovered numerous multimillion-dollar results for clients. His reputation stems from more than outcome alone; clients and colleagues alike know him for the care he brings to each case, his mastery of medical evidence, and his commitment to bringing truth to light when preventable harm has occurred.
A sixth-generation Floridian, Matt built his legal career on a foundation of service to individuals harmed by professional negligence. After earning his law degree from the University of Alabama, he began his practice under the mentorship of his law school dean, gaining early exposure to complex legal and financial issues. He later joined one of Jacksonville’s largest law firms, where he sharpened his trial skills and discovered a calling to pursue professional malpractice cases. That experience set the course for a lifelong commitment to holding medical institutions and practitioners accountable when their failures cause catastrophic harm.
Matt’s leadership in the field has been recognized repeatedly through honors such as Florida Super Lawyer and an AV Preeminent rating from Martindale-Hubbell. He has authored widely cited articles on stroke litigation and medical negligence, and he frequently speaks at national and international legal conferences, including multiple American Association for Justice conventions. His scholarly work has appeared in publications such as Trial, Medical Law Perspectives, the Journal of Forensic Sciences, and the Banking Law Journal.
As Managing Partner of the Jacksonville office, Matthew Sowell is known for his rare combination of medical insight, legal experience, and unwavering dedication to the people he represents. Clients turn to Matt in their most difficult moments, and he has built a career defined by standing with them—and fighting for them—every step of the way.
